WHO warnsof health facility attacks amid Iran conflict escalation
WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus expressed extreme concern Sunday over reports that Tehran's Gandhi Hospital was damaged during Iran's latest bombardment. The WHO is verifying the incident while emphasizing that health facilities are protected under international law and should never be targeted. This follows Ghebreyesus's earlier warnings about grave health risks from the expanding conflict, including potential nuclear safety threats. The conflict escalated after US/Israel strikes on Iran, reportedly killing Ayatollah Khamenei and causing 185 deaths at an Iranian girls' school. Ghebreyesus called for dialogue over destruction, noting attacks on healthcare in conflicts have pushed systems to collapse, with WHO documenting 2,881 attacks globally since 2022.
