YCee reveals 2020 mental health diagnosis, London hospital stay
YCee says he was diagnosed with a mental health condition in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown, spent six months in London and was in-and-out of hospital for about three months before returning to Nigeria to continue treatment because of his visa type. He described multiple hospital stays, medication and therapy, saying his condition was 'up and down - sometimes looking good, sometimes getting really dark.' The rapper says he is now stable after treatment and therapy, and that the struggle contributed to his break from music.
Why does this matter to you? Mental health challenges affect many Nigerians, yet stigma often keeps people from seeking help. Hearing a public figure talk openly about hospitalisation, medication and therapy can help normalise the conversation and encourage others to look after their own well-being.
What should you know or do? If you or someone you know is struggling, consider reaching out to a trusted health professional, a counsellor or a support line such as the Suicide Prevention Hotline 0809-210-0009. Early help can make a difference.
