With just 16 days left before the 2026 Commonwealth Games kick off in Glasgow, former long jump gold medalist Yusuf Alli gathered Team Nigeria athletes in Aberdeen, Scotland, for their first official meeting and delivered a blunt message: discipline, not just talent, will decide their fate. Speaking on behalf of the National Sports Commission’s Elite Athletes Development and Podium Board, Alli stressed punctuality for meals, adherence to training and transport schedules, and sufficient rest as non‑negotiable habits of champions. “If we all do the little things right, the medals will take care of themselves,” he said, reminding the squad that wearing Nigeria’s colours means carrying the hopes of millions.

Also present, Athletics Federation of Nigeria Second Vice President Akuchukwu Aghazu echoed the call for focus, unity and staying clear of distractions. Team Nigeria is slated to compete in ten sports from July 23 to August 2, and NSC officials are confident that the emphasis on discipline and teamwork will translate into podium finishes and bolster the country’s proud Commonwealth legacy.
