Zelensky Secures Gulf Defense Pacts on Drone Warfare

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky completed a surprise diplomatic tour of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar between March 27-28, 2026, signing defense agreements focused on sharing anti-drone and missile defense technology. In Doha, Qatar’s defence ministry stated the pact includes "collaboration in technological fields, development of joint investments and the exchange of expertise in countering missiles and unmanned aerial systems." Similar deals were struck with Abu Dhabi and Riyadh earlier in the week.

This pivot sees Ukraine leveraging its frontline experience downing Russian drones to become a security partner for Gulf states facing Iran’s escalating drone campaign. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine "not only needs assistance but is also ready to support those who support us," deploying anti-drone experts to all three nations. The core proposal: Ukraine shares its cheaper interceptors in exchange for the advanced Western air-defense missiles Gulf states currently use against Iranian drones—missiles Kyiv desperately needs to replenish stocks for its own war effort.

For Nigeria, this underscores that drone threats have evolved into a global priority. Our own security forces battling Boko Haram and ISWAP have increasingly encountered weaponized drones. While Nigeria isn’t a party to these deals, the agreements signal a shift toward practical defense-tech partnerships outside traditional Western frameworks. Nigerian security planners should monitor Ukraine’s technology offerings and consider whether collaborative models—either with Kyiv or other partners—could enhance our counter-drone capabilities without dependency on expensive foreign systems.
